nepantla is a Nahuatl concept meaning “being in-between”. Being in-between is however not just a transitory phase, but an ontological indeterminacy. We find Uranga’s description of nepantla as a pendulum motion adequate. A pendulum is always in-between states and never fully determined by one single identity, by one single state or position. It is essentially non-essential. It is accordingly essentially in-between.
Such an attitude reflects the openness of Forum Nepantla: a place, a forum, a space of dynamic and open dialogue, that thus always goes beyond and pendulates beyond the conclusions it draws. Forum Nepantla is a project initiated by Federica Gonzalez Luna Ortiz, Fernando Wirtz, and Adrian Razvan Sandru. We invite contributions that promote cross- and trans-disciplinary as well as cross-cultural thought in any style and from any perspective. For submission proposals please see our guidelines.
